HSL Solicits Feedback on 2010 Journal Cancellation Candidates

The UNC Health Sciences Library has compiled a list of journal cancellation candidates and is posting this list for public review until July 31, 2010. Your feedback is critical.

The UNC Health Sciences Library has compiled a list of journal cancellation candidates and will post this list for public review until July 31, 2010. Feedback from journal users is critical. Please review the list and rate the titles in your area, along with any other titles of interest. The deadline for reviewing this list is July 31, 2010.

The list contains more than 170 titles, covering all health sciences areas and represents potential savings of over $270,000. This figure exceeds our targeted savings goal of $200,000 because we expect that your feedback will necessitate keeping some of the items on the list. It includes some titles posted in last year, and reviews that once again had a high cost per use.

There are three types of journals on the review list:
1. Titles with no online access are marked "Subscribed in print only."
2. Titles that, if cancelled, would still be available online, usually after a delay of 6 to 12 months, are marked "Delayed access even if cancelled."
3. For all unmarked titles, access will cease after December 2010 if the subscription is cancelled.

Access to older content will remain, and new articles can be requested via Interlibrary Loan.

For more details about the review process, see the FAQ and Cancellation Criteria. The cost to renew all existing subscriptions for journals and databases, without adding any new content, is projected at around $3,000,000 for 2010 - 2011. Due to budgetary constraints and demand for new journals and materials, we must find savings in our acquisitions budget. Our goal is to keep as much valued content available as possible, minimizing negative impact on our users, while still achieving our budget reduction targets. We will seriously consider all feedback received and use it to help make the best decisions possible. Thank you in advance for your time and help.
