Information Security and IT Simplification Services

The School of Medicine has engaged Dell to perform an Information Security and IT Simplification assessment of SOM IT infrastructure operations.

The purpose of this activity is to:

  • Develop a strategic plan for IT Operations and Security for the School, with emphasis on optimizing IT services through consolidation of IT resources and implementation of IT best practices.
  • Develop an IT security architecture that will provide an improved level of security to efficiently and adequately protect our sensitive information.

The project will begin on May 24th and last approximately 12 weeks.

The discovery phase of the assessment process is scheduled to begin shortly.  Over the next few weeks, key stakeholders (chairs, business officers, technical staff in OIS and departments, etc.) will be asked to participate in interviews with the Dell team.  The purpose of these interviews is to gather information on current IT operations in the School, as well as identifying overall IT needs and shortfalls.  The interviews will last approximately 2 hours.

The assessment will also include the use of automated data collecting tools that will ride on the network to inventory servers connected to the network, as well as the resources and applications/services on those servers.  These tools will require server administrators to install an agent with administrative level access on their servers to aid with the collection. Dell has signed appropriate HIPAA Business Associates Agreements to ensure proper protection and handling of any sensitive information that they may encounter during the process.  Chairs are asked to ensure that system administrators in their departments cooperate fully with the assessment team.

If you have any questions or wish to provide input to the interviews, please contact Dennis Schmidt at Dennis_Schmidt@med.unc.edu.

Thank you in advance for your participation.
