OIS System Updates - Dec. 4 and Dec. 6

The OIS Systems team is scheduling system updates to three servers. The first set of updates will take place on Sunday Dec. 4 beginning at 10 a.m. and complete by 11:30 a.m. The second on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 9 p.m. - 11 p.m.

Summary

During this time network access will appear to be slow as the primary DNS server is patched.  The second set of updates will occur on Tuesday December 6 beginning at 9:00pm and completing by 11:00pm.  During this update the lyris list serve system will be unavailable.

What to Know

OIS is updating three critical infrastructure servers in response to a vulnerability announced by the vendor.

On Sunday December 4 10:00am-11:00am OIS Systems will update the following servers:

  • ns0.med.unc.edu (152.19.4.1)
  • kipling.med.unc.edu (152.19.4.115)

The server ns0.med.unc.edu is the primary DNS server for the School of Medicine.  DNS services will be available within the School during the outage but web surfing and other network access will appear to be slow.  The server should by up by 10:30am.

The server kipling.med.unc.edu is used to house Unix home directories (including personal web publishing) and FRS data for customers.  The downtime for updates should have minimal impact on business operations.

On Tuesday December 6 9:00pm-11:00pm OIS Systems will update the Oracle database server that hosts the Lyris listserv database and the HIPAA training modules.  During this time mail will be queued for later delivery and the HIPAA training module will be unavailable for completion.
