RE:         Opening Doors

I am pleased to announce that the UNC School of Medicine will continue their collaborative agreement with the Office of Human Resources and the Equal Opportunity/ADA Office to sponsor Opening Doors for UNC employees.  Through external collaborations with Cornell University, NC State, and the SUNY Research Foundation, the UNC School of Medicine and UNC will once again offer the hallmark initiative, “Opening Doors” at three different times during 2011.  This thought-provoking program has been used nationally for over 18 years with outstanding feedback and impact on institutional and systemic efforts to improve the climate for diversity and inclusion.  The feedback from UNC participants has been consistently outstanding and we are very pleased to make an opportunity available to you to participate without cost to you or your unit (other than transportation to the workshop site).

The School of Medicine is committed to providing opportunities to further develop our understanding of human differences as a means of improving our climate for inclusion and valuing of each person within the School and University.  Please see the attached brochure for additional details and consider your involvement in the Opening Doors program.  Opening Doors is appropriate for employees at all levels (faculty, staff, and EPA non-faculty employees); indeed the participation of multiple levels within an organization provides for an increased opportunity for rich discussion.

I want to strongly encourage broad participation by the School of Medicine employees.

Space is limited and we encourage you to submit your registration as soon as possible for a session which best fits your schedule.  The first session for 2011 is scheduled for March 2-4.   If you would like to register or have questions, please call Sheilah Clayton in the SOM Human Resources Office at 962-6559.  The cost of workshop materials, lodging and meals will be provided by the School of Medicine.

Our ability to create an aware and welcoming environment will be predicated on each of us understanding our roles and responsibilities in making this a reality.  I invite you to help us set the stage at UNC for this understanding by participating in this outstanding program.
