Cohen appointed to PEPFAR Scientific Advisory Board

Myron Cohen, MD, director of the UNC Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases and chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine, has been appointed to the new Scientific Advisory Board of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Ambassador Eric Goosby, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, selected Cohen to join the group of 25-30 members. The Scientific Advisory Board will provide expertise in the areas of scientific, implementation, and policy issues related to the global response to HIV/AIDS. The creation of the board indicates a new strategy for PEPFAR, seeking input from the larger global community, including those outside the U.S. Government.

PEPFAR was created in 2003 to save the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS and is has evolved to address prevention, care, and treatment with a focus on in-country programs. PEPFAR is a major component of President Obama’s $63 billion Global Health Initiative, announced in May 2009.
