Budenz to start Oct. 1

Donald L. Budenz, MD , MPH, will be UNC’s Chair of Ophthalmology effective October 1. Dr. Budenz specializes in cataracts and epidemiology, and surgical clinical trials in glaucoma.

Dr. Budenz comes to us from the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he was a professor and held joint appointments in Epidemiology and Public Health.  He also served as associate medical director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and chair of its quality assurance committee.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Budenz earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School.  His Internal Medicine internship was served at Bryn Mawr Hospital and he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. Following a Glaucoma fellowship at the University of Miami and several years practicing medicine, Dr. Budenz completed an MPH at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
