Inaugural Zollicoffer Symposium

All faculty are invited to the Inaugural Zollicoffer Symposium that will take place Feb. 16-18. Please read on for the full invitation.

Dear Distinguished UNC Faculty Member,

On behalf of Dr. Bright, Dr. Zollicoffer, and the Special Programs Office it is our pleasure to invite you to join us as we celebrate the Inaugural Zollicoffer Symposium. On Feb. 16-18, 2012, the UNC School of Medicine will recognize our students’ community and international service as well as commemorate over fifty years of minority presence at the UNC School of Medicine.

This year’s programs will include our traditional Zollicoffer-Merrimon Lecture.  Our keynote speaker will be Marie A. Bernard, MD, Deputy Director of the National Institute on Aging, a division of the National Institute of Health.  Dr. Bernard’s research interests include nutrition and function in aging populations, with particular emphasis on ethnic minorities.  The lecture will be followed by the traditional Community Service Day programs and the Zollicoffer banquet.  It is our pleasure to invite you to attend all of these programs.  Additionally, we are excited about the events which we have added to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Lawrence Zollicoffer’s graduation from UNC School of Medicine. Please register to attend the weekend’s events by Feb. 10 at the following website:  Registration is required for attendance.  (Please note the small fee associated with registration for a few events.)

Over the course of this weekend we hope to reconnect with alums and develop dynamic relationships between our graduates, our faculty and our current students. Your participation is crucial to not only this weekend’s success but also the success that we hope to achieve in strengthening the minority presence at UNC School of Medicine.  This year we are holding a Silent Auction to benefit the Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate Program! They are an organization dedicated to mentoring the underserved students in the area. The Silent Auction will be held Thursday, Feb. 16 during the Alumni Welcome Reception at 6 p.m. We hope you will join us for the Welcome Reception/Silent Auction Thursday and for a dynamic lecture and subsequent day of events Friday.

We look forward to seeing you as we enjoy and an engaging weekend of activities celebrating the history of UNC School of Medicine and honoring the legacy of Dr. Lawrence Zollicoffer. Please do not hesitate to contact the Special Programs Office if you have any questions, (919-966-7673, or email Click here to see a calendar listing that will allow you add the event to your Outlook calendar.

With warm regards,
