HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – UNC Health Care this week opened a new Emergency Department in Hillsborough, the first step in a phased opening of the health care system’s Hillsborough Campus. The Hillsborough Campus is a key component of UNC Health Care’s long-term strategy of providing specialized care that’s convenient and closer to home. The new Campus also will help shift less complicated cases away from UNC Hospitals’ main Campus, allowing patients with more complex cases to be treated at Chapel Hill.

“The Hillsborough Campus provides another convenient location for us to treat the growing population of Orange County and beyond,” said Jeff Strickler, Hillsborough Campus Administrator. “It will also allow the Medical Center to focus on more complex cases – critical in ensuring that UNC Health Care is doing everything we can to meet the needs of our patients efficiently and continue our commitment to leading, teaching and caring.”

The Hillsborough Campus is located just off I-40 and I-85, providing convenient care with easy access and free parking. The new Emergency Department has 10 rooms surrounding a providers’ station in a “racetrack” design. The Emergency Department will be able to handle any emergency 24/7, and uses an innovative triage process to stabilize and treat patients. Some patients who need more specialized care will be transferred to the main UNC Hospitals campus.

In addition to the Emergency Department, the Campus will offer Outpatient Surgery, Inpatient Services and a Critical Care Unit, as well as support services to provide integrated, convenient and patient-centered care. Elective surgical programs including Joint, Spine, Ophthalmology, Urology, Benign Gynecology and General Surgery will be available. Women’s Care services now based at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill will relocate most of its services to the Hillsborough Campus.

“Patients are at the heart of everything we do,” said Dr. Brian Goldstein, Executive Vice President and COO, UNC Hospitals. “That’s why we are always looking at ways to improve the care they receive. The Hillsborough Campus is a very important component of that change, and we will operate the Hillsborough Campus in a way that is consistent with our values and mission.”

Since breaking ground on the Hillsborough Campus in 2011, UNC Health Care has remained in close coordination with Hillsborough community and business leaders to ensure that construction and growth plans are consistent with those of the Hillsborough town and community.

Outpatient Surgery will open in early August, and Inpatient Services will open in late August.
