Overnight Blood Collections by Phlebotomy Services Staff

To best serve our patients and staff, Phlebotomy Services Offers Blood Collections for those patients placed in beds during the late evening and early morning hours.

Patients who meet the criteria for these collections are those who are placed in a bed between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. and whose orders are being placed after 9:30 p.m. Orders placed before 9:30 p.m. should be placed on a phlebotomy round.

Patients placed in a bed between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. and whose orders are being placed after 9:30 p.m. (the cut off for the last phlebotomy round of the day) will be able to see a Timed/Now order option in CPOE. When selected, this order will populate on the scanners and a phlebotomist will respond as soon as possible to perform the collection.

The Timed/Now order will only populate for patients who were placed in a bed between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. This includes patients who may still be in the Emergency Department but whose care has been handed off to a medical team and is placing orders via CPOE.

We hope this service will assist clinicians with patient assessment during the late evening and early morning hours when routine phlebotomy rounds are not available. Questions about this newly available service can be addressed to Diana Willoughby, Assistant Administrative Director of Phlebotomy Services, at 919-966-7667, or dwilloug@unch.unc.edu.
