Rehabilitation engineering is the systematic application of engineering principles and sciences to the design, development, evaluation and application of technological solutions to problems confronted by humans and animals experiencing limited function. In humans functional limitations may affect mobility, communications, hearing, vision, cognition, and activities associated with employment, independent living, education and integration into the community. In animals, functional limitations may prohibit working as a service or therapy animal, performing search and rescue, or interacting with their families in the case of companion animals. Whatever the challenge, collaboration between engineers, clinicians and community partners is key to enhancing function and maximizing the potential for humans and animal to contribute to society. Examples of research in the field of rehabilitation engineering will be described with a focus on the use of computer modeling to investigate cruciate ligament rupture in dogs and the in situ evaluation of wheelchair user and transit operator activities in public transportation.
