Tim Smith, MPA, selected for Jim Bernstein Community Health Leadership Fellowship

Tim Smith, MPA, is a program associate with UNC Family Medicine. He works with Carolina Health Net, a program which aims to create a high-quality cost effective system of care for the uninsured by providing access to a medical home, care coordination, medications, diagnostic, and specialty services. Carolina Health Net partners with UNC Health Care and Piedmont Health Services.

"He is a true asset to the Carolina Health Net program", notes Sherry Hay, MPA, Director of Community Health Initiatives for UNC Family Medicine.  "His work in the fellowship will help us in our continual quality improvement efforts both in the community and with our community of learners."   Tim helps to lead community outreach efforts, coordinates data analysis and database management, triages voice center calls, and helps with community connections.  Tim will receive up to two years of funding to support a project entitled “Mapping a Course to Healthier Communities.” He will examine the use of geo-mapping to assist residents with community health assessment.  This specific work will be mentored by Dr. Evan Askin, UNC Family Medicine, in concert with the Piedmont Health Family Medicine Residency Track .

The purpose of the Jim Bernstein Community Health Leadership Fellows Program is to prepare emerging leaders to work in and improve the health of underserved North Carolina communities. The Fellows Program identifies and supports the work of outstanding health professionals early in their careers who are working with underserved populations.
