SOM Larry Keith Advisory Colleges go head to head in book drive competition

UNC’s libraries are partnering with campus departments to collect children’s books for the Book Fairy, an organization that donates books to the Pediatric Oncology Clinic at UNC Hospitals.

All faculty, staff, and students can donate to the book drive until Dec. 6.

The book drive will serve as part of the year-long competition between the six advisory colleges, the College Cup. Every book donated will earn points for the donating student's advisory college, and the college that collects the most books will be awarded additional points. Medical students participating in the Larry Keith Advisory Colleges have a goal of donating 500 books to this year’s book drive.

Faculty and staff are welcome to participate in the drive, and can contact Anna Rodenbough (anna_rodenbough@med.unc.edu) if they would like to donate directly through the med school competition. Otherwise, book donations drop-off locations are listed below.

All new or gently-used books for ages one through mid-teen are welcome. The need is especially great for English and Spanish-language board books, the sturdy picture books made for young children. Also needed are books featuring children and families of many cultures.

Friends of the Library will wrap up the drive by accepting donated books at the annual Winter Stories program on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m., in the lobby of Wilson Library.

The Bull’s Head Bookshop will offer a 25 percent discount on children’s books purchased for donation to the book drive. At the time of purchase simply mention the phrase “Book Fairy” to the staff.
