CHIP Lecture: Identifying Lung Cancer Patients Using Natural Language Processing Techniques

Being able to screen patients for lung cancer nodules is both important for retrospective and prospective clinical research and operations. The presentation describes how the team was able to do this with Natural Language Processing of the free text of radiology reports.

The focus of the presentation is on the implementation of the NLP infrastructure and the challenges of going from the requirements envisioned by the clinician to a set of specifications suitable for programmatic information retrieval. We also cover the issues encountered in the validation of the NLP results.
