Lisa Rahangdale, MD, MPH, Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been named Associate Dean for Admissions. She will assume the new role beginning Aug. 3.

Rahangdale, a UNC School of Medicine graduate, said this is a special opportunity to help shape the careers of future physicians trained at UNC.

“This is a huge honor for me,” Rahangdale said. “Many of the opportunities I’ve had in my career stem from my time at UNC. I look forward to being able to shape future classes of students who also will thrive at this great medical school.”

Rahangdale has served on the School of Medicine’s Admissions Committee since 2016 and been involved with interviewing potential students since 2014. She succeeds Robert Bashford, MD, who now leads the UNC School of Medicine’s Office of Rural Initiatives.

“The School of Medicine is committed to enrolling a diverse group of academically excellent students –nothing about that will change,” Rahangdale said. “We need to ensure that we continue to fill our classes with students who are passionate about patient care, service, and scientific discovery.”

In addition to previous experience with admissions, Rahangdale has played a prominent role in education and curriculum development. She was a member of the committee that oversaw the transition to the new TEC Curriculum and has served as Reproductive Medicine Block Director.

“I am thrilled to have a UNC School of Medicine alum, a native North Carolinian, in this important role shaping our future,” said Julie Byerley, MD, MPH, Vice Dean for Education. “Dr. Rahangdale has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to UNC through her work as a clinical leader, previous block director in the TEC curriculum, and active admissions committee member. She will lead our Admissions team with excellence.”

Ms. Randee Reid will continue in her role as Director of Admissions.

As she assumes these new responsibilities, Rahangdale will continue both her clinical and research work. Since 2009, she has served as the Director of the NC Women’s Hospital Dysplasia Clinic. In her busy practice, she also serves as a longitudinal preceptor for UNC SOM students. In 2017 she was awarded the Association of Professors in Gynecology & Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award.

Rahangdale’s research focuses on the impact of HIV and HPV on women’s health and has led her to form fruitful, collaborative, multidisciplinary relationships across UNC and nationally. In 2012, her research on medical therapies for cervical precancer earned her the UNC School of Medicine’s James W. Woods Award.

Rahangdale received both her BS and MD from UNC. She completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University and a Reproductive Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. She received her MPH from the University of California, Berkeley. She has been a member of the UNC School of Medicine faculty since 2009.
