Raj Pruthi, MD, is the new chair of the department, which became operational on July 1, 2013. The proposed School of Medicine constitutional amendment to create the department was approved by the faculty in May.

Prema Menezes, PhD, has been appointed as the first director of the physician assistant (PA) master’s degree program currently being developed within the Department of Allied Health Sciences (DAHS) at UNC School of Medicine. She will assume the role on August 1.
Dr. George F. Sheldon passed away on June 16, 2013. A memorial service will be held on campus on October 12. Please note, the time was originally set for 1 p.m. It was changed in late August to noon.

In March 2012, SOM faculty members endorsed changes to the SOM bylaws that provided for additional opportunities for peer selection of faculty to standing committees of the medical school. Voting for representatives on six committees is open until August 16.

On Friday, the Surgery Department threw Dr. Colin Thomas a party for his 95th birthday. Dr. Thomas was chairman of UNC's Department of Surgery for 18 years and was one of the first faculty members on staff when N.C. Memorial Hospital opened in 1952.
