The funded telemedicine program is in collaboration with four Area Health Education Centers (AHEC’s) throughout the state of North Carolina.

“Telemedicine for Diabetic Retinopathy evaluation establishes a logical partnership between primary care physicians and retina specialists by facilitating the identification of patients who are at high risk of vision loss from diabetes and who may not be able to get the recommended annual evaluation by an ophthalmologist,” Dr. Garg said.

"This could make a major public health contribution by ultimately reducing the barriers to care and preventing vision-threatening Diabetic Retinopathy."
