For Nancy Nye, being at Carolina was a dream come true

This story from The Gazette features Nancy Nye, the administrator for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, who is retiring Sept. 1.

Nancy Nye grew up in rural Harnett County in the 1940s and early 1950s when most of the roads were dirt and the only thing within walking distance was the Baptist church.

She was one of five children, nearly enough for her parents to fill an entire pew every Sunday morning. “The church was not just the center of our religious life,” Nye said. “It was our social life as well.”

Besides religion, she grew up on basketball. Maybe that was one reason, even as a little girl, her heart has always belonged to Carolina. Even then, she said, following the team during the NCAA tournament was an obsession.
