The Dean’s Office of the School of Medicine invites internal nominations and expressions of interest from internal School of Medicine faculty who would like to be considered as candidates for the position of Associate Dean for Graduate Education

The Associate Dean for Graduate Education serves the School of Medicine by overseeing the mission of the Office of Graduate Education (OGE), which is to foster excellence in graduate education by providing high quality programs and services to students, faculty, graduate programs, and the broader university community in support of graduate training in the biological and biomedical sciences. This position reports to the Vice Dean for Research.

The position has the following responsibilities:  The OGE supports graduate students from admission to post-graduate placement; provides career and professional training; facilitates community building and networking for graduate students; and attracts and cultivates a community of diverse scholars. The ADGE will oversee the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP), an umbrella admissions and first year graduate program for students interested in one of the 14 Ph.D. programs associated with BBSP; and also the Science Training and Diversity (STaD) group of the OGE, which administers several graduate enrichment and diversity programs. The successful candidate will supervise a staff that will work closely and effectively with the graduate students and directors of the 14 Ph.D. granting programs within BBSP, as well as department chairs and center directors from the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Public Health and the College of Arts and Sciences.  .

The Associate Dean for Graduate Education is a “nominal” at-will appointment that is attached to a current faculty appointment and serves at the pleasure of the Dean.  A nominal appointment is an administrative assignment made at the Dean’s discretion which is in addition to a primary academic appointment.  The successful applicant is expected to be a faculty member and will hold academic appointment(s) congruent with his/her professional background.  He or she should exhibit: a) qualities of leadership and peer recognition both within their School or Institution as well as regionally/nationally; b) superior communication and interpersonal skills; c) the capacity to inspire confidence in his/her reasoning and decision-making; d) demonstrate a strong leadership record in innovative training of graduate students; and e) hold a Ph.D. or M.D. in a biological or biomedical discipline.
