Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that we write to inform you that Dr. George F. Sheldon passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2013. Dr. Sheldon spent his last days at UNC Hospitals surrounded by his family.

Dr. Sheldon arrived at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1984 to chair the Department of Surgery. He served in that capacity until 2001 when he retired from the position. His many leadership roles included President of the AAST, ACS, ASA and AAMC. Dr. Sheldon remained very active at the University, serving on the Faculty Council and the Faculty Assembly for UNC. In 2011, Dr. Sheldon received the prestigious UNC Thomas Jefferson Award, created to recognize a UNC faculty member who exemplifies the ideals and objectives of former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson through personal influence and performance of duty in teaching, writing, and scholarship. Most notably, Dr. Sheldon received the American College of Surgeons’ 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Convocation Ceremonies last year. Dr. Sheldon was recognized for his lifetime contribution to medicine and surgery and for his service to the American College of Surgeons. This was only the second time in the history of the College that this award was bestowed.

Dr. Sheldon has been a significant and impactful leader for surgeons around the world but he will be sorely missed by those with whom he worked at UNC and by the residents that he trained. Plans for a memorial service in Chapel Hill are currently being finalized and details will be forthcoming. Additionally, the Womack Society and the Department of Surgery are working to organize an event to honor Dr. Sheldon at the American College of Surgeons meeting in Washington, D.C., this October. More information on this event will also be forthcoming as the date approaches.
