Rose to speak on relations of biosciences & social sciences

Nikolas Rose, Professor of Sociology and Head of the Department of Social Science, Health, & Medicine at Kings College, London, is a scholar of "biopolitics." His public talk, "A New Sociology for a New Century?," considers new roles for the human and social sciences in the contemporary bioscientific era.

Visiting Scholar Nikolas Rose will be hosted by the UNC Department of Social Medicine for several days in late April (in conjunction with the Institute for Arts & Humanities and the College of Arts & Sciences Interdisciplinary Initiatives Program).

He will give a public talk on Friday April 26 (3:30pm, Toy Lounge, Dey Hall) on opening relations between the human/social sciences and the biological sciences, followed by a reception near campus. During his visit, he will also participate in colloquia with the Moral Economies of Medicine Working Group, the Philosophical Issues in Psychiatry Research Group, a cross-disciplinary graduate reading group, and Duke Cultural Anthropology. Professor Rose has written widely on intersections of biomedicine & sociopolitical forces. His latest book is Neuro: The New Brain Sciences and the Management of the Mind (Princeton, 2013).
