For 30 years, national commissions have been calling for those who conduct research to provide treatment for subjects who may be harmed through participation, arguing that we have an ethical obligation to care for those who bear the risk. Many countries have policies that require treatment or compensation for research injuries, but only a few U.S. agencies and institutions have established self-insurance programs. Is it finally time for a nationalized system that would mandate coverage for research-related injury?
