All are welcome at this session with Professor Shepherd, whose writing and teaching have illuminated many of the quandaries that present around decision making for patients with serious illness. Advance directives are typically viewed as conducive to better conversations about care in this context -- “speaking for” the patient who is no longer able to talk with us. Yet, challenges can and do arise when we turn to them for instructions on patients’ preferences. Join us for a session devoted to the challenges that follow from our earnest endeavors to interpret prospective planning in clinical practice.
