The WTS Scholarship Program is open to female medical students, general surgery residents and thoracic surgery residents who are interested in a career in cardiothoracic surgery. The scholarship covers meeting registration fees, lodging and up to $500 in travel expenses so that the winner can attend the annual Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) meeting, which will take place in San Diego, CA, Jan. 25-28, 2015.

Dr. Shah, a graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, is in her fourth program year. This year, she is working in the lab of UNC pediatric surgeon Sean McLean, MD, investigating the mechanism behind pulmonary hypertension in congenital diaphragmatic hernia. She is interested in both pediatric surgery and thoracic surgery as potential specialties and looks forward to finding out more about the field of thoracic surgery at the STS meeting.
