Dear Residents,
We are a group of medical students who have been inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. The Gold Foundation encourages us as a group to continue to be active in ways that build and sustain humanism in our institution. When we met we learned that they also suggest a Day of Solidarity on Valentine’s Day and we, as medical students, want to express our solidarity with you.
We notice that you are tired, hungry, over worked and under-appreciated. In fact, it scares us, as we realize that we will soon be in your shoes – or a similar pair of well-worn Danskos with spatters of blood and hand sanitizer. But we appreciate your immense contribution to our education, often teaching us and coaching us more than anyone else. We appreciate that you make us feel part of the team, and give us some purpose, direction and guidance in our education.
So today, we want to say thank you. Thanks for showing us how to suture, and being patient as we fumble with the needle driver. Thanks for giving us a pep talk before we have to break bad news to the patient we came to adore on the service. Thanks for listening patiently as we blunder through an ill-conceived oral presentation, and taking the time to give us some feedback on how to improve. Thanks for taking the time with your patients – we notice that, too. When you hold the hand of your cancer patient, sit down with a family in the ICU, or play peek-a-boo with a scared kid in the ER, it reminds us how to practice medicine. Thanks for not losing that in yourself, and for cultivating it in us, too. Thanks for all of your time, your effort, your teaching, and your compassion. Thanks for being role models to each and every one of us, and for showing us the way to be better physicians, professionals, and caretakers.
From all of us in the medical school, to all of the residents, we sincerely thank you. You will notice a number of activities that day designed to show our appreciation. Please stop by the Hospital Lobby between 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and pick up a treat or cup of coffee and see how others choose to say thank you. Listen out for students to express their gratitude during oral presentations, and look out for buttons that support this day of solidarity. Today, we just want to say thanks for all you do for us, but most of all for patients.
Signed,
Gold Humanism Honor Society
