The Women’s Heart Program in the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care is proud to offer the 2nd Annual Women’s Heart Symposium.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death of women in the United States. What you may not know is that women often present different symptoms of heart disease than men. With misdiagnosis common, it is especially important that women be aware of those differences and stay proactive in their own care.

The symposium is being held on Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the William and Ida Friday Center in Chapel Hill.  Registration is $20, which includes breakfast and lunch for each participant. Space is limited to the first 75 registrants.

The daylong event is aimed to increase awareness of women’s heart disease. Participants will have their complete lipid panel, blood glucose, blood pressure, and BMI measured. Top specialists in their field from UNC will be on hand to present and educate, as well as discuss testing results with attendees.

The keynote speaker is Linda Calhoun, MD, FACC, from Cape Fear Heart Associates in Wilmington, N.C. Dr. Calhoun is a regional representative for the American College of Cardiology, and she will be presenting on “Women and Heart Disease Through the Ages.”

Topics at the symposium include:

  • An overview of heart disease in women
  • Heart failure in women
  • Device therapy in women: cardiac electrophysiology, pacemakers, defibrillators, and more
  • Cardiovascular disease and exercise
  • Cardiovascular disease and nutrition
  • Cardiovascular disease and stress
  • Stretching for Health
