Michalak begins Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical Research Fellowship
As her classmates return to Chapel Hill to begin their fourth year at the UNC School of Medicine, Suzanne Michalak will be at a lab bench at Boston Children’s Hospital. The recipient of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Medical Research Fellowship, Michalak will spend the year in Boston researching congenital eye movement disorders in the lab of Elizabeth Engle, MD.

BBSP welcomes new class of PhD students
On August 10, a new class of PhD students interested in medical and biological sciences arrived to begin a week of orientation. They will receive their first year of science training through the Biomedical and Biological Sciences Program (BBSP) before selecting one of the BBSP member PhD programs and selecting a thesis advisor and lab in which to do their thesis research. We spoke to several students about what they are most excited about.

Voice Over IP (VoIP) Phone Transition Scheduled for MacNider and Old Clinic
VoIP phones are being installed in MacNider and Old Clinic but will not be active until September. Please make sure your VoIP phone remains plugged in to the wall. There is the potential for a short service outage as early as the night prior to and the entire day of the transition.
Committee Representative Election Results
In March 2012, SOM faculty members endorsed changes to the SOM bylaws that provided for additional opportunities for peer selection of faculty to standing committees of the medical school. Ballots were completed during the month of July, and committee membership is now being announced.
