School of Medicine Community Service and Advocacy Day

On Feb. 20, the Eugene S. Mayer Community Service Honor Society will hold its annual Community Service and Advocacy Day, culminating with the 35th Annual Zollicoffer-Merrimon and Community Service Day Banquet, where several outstanding students will be honored.

12:00 - 1:00 p.m., Old Clinic Auditorium

Sponsored by the UNC Chapter of SNMA and the Merrimon Family

Herman Taylor, MD, MPH, FCCC, FAHA, director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute and Professor of Medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine, gives the 2015 Zollicoffer-Merrimon Lecture.  Abstract of the lecture will be provided.

Community Service Day Poster Presentations

2:30 - 4:00 p.m., NC Cancer Hospital Lobby

Hear from medical students who have engaged with and impacted the community at home and abroad over the last year. Students from the Mayer Society and the Allcott Award will present posters on their individual community service projects and will be available to answer any questions regarding their experiences.

SNMA Silent Auction and Cocktail Hour

5:00 - 6:00 p.m., George Watts Hill Alumni Center

The UNC Chapter of the Student National Medical Association hosts the 2015 SNMA Silent Auction to benefit the Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Project.The Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Project is a program of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools that offers mentoring, advocacy, tutoring, leadership training, enrichment and scholarship support services to students. The program targets African-American and Latino students as a part of the district's mission to close the racial achievement gap. The mission: To establish supportive relationships between adults and children to broaden children's visions of their future; consequently helping them reach their fullest academic, physical, emotional, and social potential.

35th Annual Zollicoffer-Merrimon and Community Service Day Banquet

6:00 - 8:30 p.m., George Watts Hill Alumni Center

This year's banquet celebrates the legacy of Dr. Lawrence Zollicoffer and honors both our Zollicoffer-Merrimon lecturer, Dr. Herman Taylor and the students who will be inducted into the Eugene S. Mayer Community Service Honor Society. Their hard work will be highlighted with presentations from a few of our inductees.

Additionally 2015 recipients of the June C. Allcott Fellowship, the Salber-Phillips Award, Schweitzer Fellows, and the Lawrence Zollicoffer - Alan Cross Community Health Fellowship will be recognized.

The cost to attend is $25/student guests, $45/faculty, alumni, and other guests. There is no charge for SNMA / Community Service Day Members and recipients, or for staff / administration. To register, please click here.
