Leukemia Research Foundation funding opportunity

Leukemia Research Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 funding cycle. The deadline to apply for up to $100,000 is Feb. 17.

We are now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 funding cycle. Please use this form for submission. The PDF has been set up so that you can complete and save the information on your computer. The deadline for submission is 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.

The Leukemia Research Foundation currently funds New Investigator grants only.

  • The amount is up to $100,000
  • The grant period is one year
  • Funding cycle begins on July 1, 2015

Applicants are not required to be U.S. citizens. Research projects undertaken outside the U.S. will be considered.  


  • Preference given to proposals that focus on leukemia, lymphoma, MDS, and multiple myeloma.
  • New Investigators are considered to be within seven (7) years of their first independent position. Years as a resident physician, fellow physician, or post-doctoral fellow are considered to be training years.  
  • Adjustments for career interruptions can be made. These could include but are not limited to, family leave, military service, major illness or injury. It is the responsibility of the applicant to point out and document such interruptions.
  • Investigators at the instructor level or similar position must include a letter from the department chair confirming their independence. The letter should also describe the facilities and resources available to the applicant.
  • Applicants with an NIH KO8 or K23 are eligible.


  • DOE, DOD, NSF, R21, or other grants with less than $175,000 per year in total direct costs are permitted. (Multiple grants with less than $175,000 per year in total direct costs are permitted.)
  • NIH RO1 funding, VA Merit Award or equivalent.
  • Career development awards from other national foundations  (ACS, ASH, Burroughs Wellcome, Kimmel Scholar, etc.).
  • Any single grant of $175,000 or greater in total direct costs per year.
  • Renewal applications will not be accepted. 


  • The Leukemia Research Foundation's policy does not provide funds for capital equipment (i.e. equipment purchases in excess of $5,000). Any request for exception to this policy must detail clearly the specific need of the capital equipment for the proposed research project.
  • The Leukemia Research Foundation does not provide salary support for the principal investigator.
  • Using funds for research travel is permitted but should not exceed $1,000. This money is intended only to enhance the study.
  • All other support for the project must be clearly detailed including all sources for the requested and related projects. Clearly indicate funding overlap.
  • All previous support from the Leukemia Research Foundation must be clearly stated; please list the title of the project, period(s) of support, and amount of award.
  • The LRF does not provide indirect cost recovery or institutional overhead costs.


  • Deadline for submission for 2015-2016 funding cycle is Tuesday, February 17, 2015.
  • Applications should be e-mailed to: Grants@LRFMail.org. All applicants will receive a receipt via e-mail when their application is received.
  • Grants will only be accepted electronically; hard copies of grant applications will not be accepted. 


  • Document format should be single spaced with a 12 point font used throughout. The paper size should be 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches.
  • A concise one paragraph description of the project is to be included in the application as a separate page. This paragraph should be in extreme lay terminology, appropriate for an audience without scientific training. Explain terms which cannot be simplified.
  • Your PDF file cannot exceed 10 MB in size. If it is larger than 10 MB please make arrangements with Linda Kabot, Research Grants Administrator, to accept it.
  • Application label should read as follows: LastName, FirstName, MiddleInitial. For example: Doe, Jane, N.pdf
  • You must use the 2015-2016 application cover sheet. This form must be filled out in its entirety for an application to be accepted and assigned for review.
  • The Medical Advisory Board will not consider applications that are incomplete. 


All completed applications for the 2015-2016 funding cycle will be reviewed by the Leukemia Research Foundation's independent Medical Advisory Board in early June. The Foundation approves applications for funding based on the recommendation of this panel. Notification will be mailed to applicants by June 30, 2015.


  • The Final Scientific Report should be received within 30 days of completion of the project.
  • Grantees are required to complete the Final Scientific Report Form and e-mail the Foundation with a brief scientific summary, a brief lay summary, and a list of any resulting publications. 

NOTE: This policy will be adhered to with no exceptions.
