Steiner named Assistant Dean for Clinical Education

Effective April 6, Beat Steiner, MD, MPH will assume the role of Assistant Dean for Clinical Education.

From a recent announcement to the School of Medicine's Curriculum Committees:

With the implementation of the TEC curriculum, cultivating and supporting sites for clinical education is crucial to the continued success of the UNC School of Medicine. Students now have more time for learning in the clinical environment and Steiner will contribute to the development of a wider array of opportunities for them.

This ongoing curriculum change is occurring concurrently with changes in the clinical environment that challenge physicians to be more efficient in what they do. Moving forward, students must be prepared to assist in the clinical mission and assure that their presence adds value to the care mission. This aim demands a change in the approach clinical education. In this position, Steiner will:

  • Work with Campus Directors and Course Directors to recruit and retain community preceptors
  • Coordinate faculty development efforts for community preceptors and support preceptor recognition
  • Define standards for teaching practices
  • Work with Campus Directors and Course Directors to recruit and retain community based organizations to help teach our students in interprofessional teams
  • Work with Vice Dean for Education and Campus Directors to build regional campuses
  • Work with Associate Dean for Curriculum and Evaluation and Course Directors to coordinate and implement curriculum and assessment strategies into clinical environment
  • Work with OME staff to coordinate logistics, faculty appointments, and financial support of clinical education
  • Develop further inter-professional training opportunities in clinical settings
  • Work with the Director of Curriculum Evaluation to assess the quality of our curriculum and the training environment
