News/Events

April: Carolina Mammography Registry Director Louise Henderson, PhD, was lead investigator of a UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center study that found adherence to recommended screening intervals after a false-positive mammogram result to be dependent on timing of last screening. She presented study findings at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting in New Orleans in April. Read more.

Jeff Neitlich, MD, joined the Department in April 2016 as associate professor of radiology, as well as its new abdominal imaging division chief.

April & May: UNC Department of Radiology volunteers participated in the work of the Carolina Campus Community Garden. Faculty and staff and their family members pitched in where asked to harvest, weed and compost, among multiple other activities that keep the on-campus garden producing fruit and vegetable in support of the University’s lower wage workers.

May: Drs. Matt Mauro and Bob Dixon were among multiple interventional radiologists serving in May 2016 as Oral Examiners at the last Interventional Radiology (IR) Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) subspecialty exam held in Louisville, KY.  To date, the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has administered IR training as a subspecialty residency, completed typically in 12 months. Reflecting the American Board of Medical Specialties' 2012 elevation of IR to a primary medical specialty, however, the ACGME began accrediting the first dual IR/DR residency programs in July 2015. UNC Department of Radiology expects to offer an ACGME-accredited dual IR/DR training program in the next few years.

June: In July 2014, UNC began recruiting patients for a two-year clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of prostatic artery embolization (PAE) in patients with an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). PAE is an interventional radiology procedure that offers patients an alternative to more invasive surgical treatments.

Led by Assistant Professor Dr. Ari Isaacson, the study generated enough data by spring 2016 to allow for the planning of further trials to evaluate other embolic materials that could be used in the procedure. Read More.

Honors/Awards/Appointments

Sheri G. Jordan, MD, received the 2016 Charles A. Bream Award for excellence in teaching at the Department’s end-of-year banquet in June 2016. Every year the recipient is selected by the graduating Diagnostic Radiology residents.

Gang Li, PhD, received National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) R21 funding in April 2016 for his project entitled, “Constructing 4-dimensional Infant Cortical Surface Atlases.” This two-year study seeks to develop 4D infant cortical surface-based brain atlases, as applied to better understanding of neurodevelopmental origins and abnormal trajectories of neuropsychiatric disorders.  The 4D infant cortical surface atlases developed in Li’s study will be used in neuroimaging studies of the dynamic developing cortex during early postnatal stages and will be made freely available to other researchers.
