Honors/Awards/Appointments

Lynn Fordham, MD, was selected in summer 2016 to serve as a faculty moderator of the book Being Mortal, by Atul Gawande for the Carolina Summer Reading Program. Required of all incoming UNC students, the initiative aims to generate small group discussion on books focused on modern-day topics of opinion.

Louise Henderson, PhD, received National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute (NIH/NCI) R21 funding (FY ’16 - $248,710) in August 2016 as PI of a two-year project entitled, “Evaluating the Effect of the Breast Density Legislation on Supplemental Screening.”

Louise Henderson, PhD, serves as a Co-Investigator on a five-year, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) pragmatic clinical study funded ($7.5m+) in September 2016 and entitled, “Comparative Effectiveness of Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Evaluation by Extent of Breast Density.”  The study seeks evidence to better guide practitioners in best screening methods for women with and without dense breasts. It also will seek informed insights as to whether breast MRI should be used before surgical decisions in women with newly diagnosed breast cancer.

Immediate Past Chair Joseph KT Lee, MD, FSCBTMR, received the Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance (SCBT-MR)’s Gold Medal at SCBT-MR’s 39th Annual Meeting in September 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Gold Medal is the Society’s highest honor, and Dr. Lee was one of three recipients.

Soha Bazyar, Assistant Professor Dr. Yueh Lee’s research assistant, won 3rd place in September 2016 in the Clinical/Translational category for her poster entitled, “Equivalence Dose Evaluation between Microbeam Radiation Therapy and Conventional Broadbeam Radiation Using Clonogenic Assays” at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC)’s Annual Scientific Retreat. This prize was part of a juried poster presentation of post-doctoral researchers, trainee and student projects.

Gang Li, PhD, received National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Mental Health (NIH/NIMH) two-year R21 funding ($418K) in April 2016 as PI of a two-year project (04/01/2016-03/31/2018) entitled, “Constructing 4-dimensional Infant Cortical Surface Atlases” (MPI: Dinggang Shen, PhD).
