Call for PCC Tutors

The UNC School of Medicine and Office of Medical Education is currently recruiting tutors for its Patient Centered Care Course (formally ICM 1/ICM 2 & CSD/CSI). The deadline to apply is February 16.

There are a few requirements. Tutors must be clinically active, faculty physicians within the UNC School of Medicine and:

  • See adult or adolescent patients
  • Be comfortable in generating differential diagnoses for a wide variety of common complaints
  • Be ready to teach the principles of evidence based medicine and clinical reasoning skills
  • Be able to perform and teach all aspects of the general physical exam of the adult patient
  • Be comfortable in obtaining a complicated history from a patient, including sensitive history involving issues of IPV, sexual history, giving bad news, discussing advanced directives, working with the “difficult” patient
  • Be proficient in interpretation of common diagnostic testing (chest and abdominal xrays, EKGs, labs), and clinical reasoning in developing differentials
  • Be a model of professionalism
  • Have an active interest in teaching medical students
  • Believe in the importance of the physical exam and clinical skills

Tutors will be expected to:

  • Prepare for and lead weekly sessions with students throughout calendar year
  • Commit to 18 months (3 semesters) to work with the group.
  • Read/give feedback for all write-ups
  • Serve as a professional role model
  • Write letters of support when needed
  • Give end of course summative evaluations and feedback
  • Give active formative feedback of clinical skills on a routine basis
  • Participate in OSCE assessments of students
  •  Attend faculty development sessions (including faculty retreat prior to the academic year)
  •  Attend at least 80% of tutor meetings
  •  Bring a spirit of cooperation, constructive attitude and flexibility to the group and course
  •  Enthusiastically and actively participate in the future transformation of the course, focusing on the primary goal of moving meaningful clinical experiences earlier into the curriculum
  •   Look forward to serving as a teacher and mentor by leading a small group of students
