UNC SOM SNMA Screening of "Thicker Than Blood"

UNC SOM SNMA Chapter, partnered with the NC Department of Health and Human Services and Second Glance productions, will be screening "Thicker Than Blood". Highlighting the stigma and challenges of living with HIV, as well as the often hidden intolerance of LGBTQ-members in the Black/African-American community, “Thicker Than Blood” raises thought in the mind and strikes an emotional chord in the heart. Following the film will be an open discussion of stigma and discrimination as it affects the healthcare community in NC.

"“Thicker Than Blood” tells the story of Jordan, a gay man raised in a homophobic household, who returns home for the first time in three years to celebrate his older brother’s promotion to partnership in a prestigious law firm. During what’s supposed to be a joyous afternoon of family, friends, and food, secrets are revealed, masks are uncovered, and some things are said that just can’t be taken back. A once tight-knit family is left broken and faced with the task of trying to figure out how to pick up the pieces and put them back together before losing each other… forever.""

The goal of this film is to dispel myths and increase awareness and knowledge surrounding HIV, homophobia and stigma; and to engage HIV+ community members and non-infected community members to address social, cultural and structural barriers faced by HIV+/LGBTQ community members.

The screening of this film is free to faculty, healthcare professionals, and students.
