Myung ParkDr. Park is a trauma/critical care surgeon and laboratorian at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. Prior to joining the Department of Surgery at Mayo, she served in the United States Air Force for 13 years. During this period, she was a research fellow at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research during her residency, critical care fellow at University of Pennsylvania and was a clinical burn fellow at US Army Institute of Surgical Research. In 2004 and 2006, Dr. Park was deployed to Iraq as a trauma surgeon and burn consultant at Balad AF Theater Hospital. During this time, she had a tremendous opportunity to care for U.S. casualties and Iraqi nationals suffering from severe ballistic and burn injuries. This clinical experience cemented her desire to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying hyper- and hypo-coagulopathy we observe in the injured patients. Under the mentorship of Dr. John Heit, Dr. Park obtained a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences at the Mayo Graduate School and completed a 4.5 year, prospective case-cohort study, which led to development of a trauma venous thromboembolism risk tool. The goal is to validate this risk prediction tool in a future study.

Dr. Park is currently an Associate Medical Director, Basic Science Research and Director of Disaster Preparedness at Mayo Clinic Trauma Center. She is actively engaged in mentoring residents and medical students, and hosts scheduled journal club and research dinners for the trainees.
