Smith named assistant secretary of American Urological Association

The American Urological Association has announced several new leadership positions to support and guide its international activities. Angela Smith, MD, MS, FACS, assistant professor of urology, has been selected as one of three assistant secretaries.

In the role of assistant secretary, Smith will play a critical role in supporting the AUA’s international strategy, programming, and activities. Smith is one of three leading urologists selected for this assistant secretary role along with Sam Chung, MD, MBA, of Vanderbilt University, and Aseem Shukla, MD, of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

As Assistant Secretaries, Drs. Chang, Shukla and Smith will play critical roles supporting the AUA Secretary in shaping and executing on the Association’s international strategy, programming and activities. By fully leveraging the AUA’s global reach and an influence tremendously respected throughout the world, each will assist implementing the AUA’s International Education Plan and identifying new opportunities with national and multi-national urological societies. Additionally, they will work to maintain relationships with key urologists and other strategic partners across the globe, participate in the AUA’s Annual Meeting and serve as section editors for the AUA publication, AUANews. These positions are a reflection of the continuity and foundation Inderbir Gill, MD, established during his tenure as AUA’s Chair of Global Initiatives. Dr. Gill completed his term on December 31, 2017.

“Today’s announcement further solidifies our commitment to advancing urology on a universal scale,” said AUA Secretary, Manoj Monga, MD, FACS. “I would like to thank Dr. Gill for his many contributions to the international community and I look forward to working with Drs. Chang, Shukla, and Smith to further expand and enhance our programs, globally.

Specifically, Smith will oversee the AUA’s partnerships in Latin America and the Caribbean.
