The Medical Director for Perioperative Services (MDPS) is the lead physician for the perioperative services areas of UNC Medical Center.

The MDPS shares with the Vice President for Perioperative Services (VPPS) the ultimate responsibility for the clinical activities that take place in these locations. The MDPS reports to the Chief Medical Officer / VP of Medical Affairs and serves as the principal liaison between UNC Hospitals and the members of its Medical Staff who practice in perioperative services areas on matters of daily clinical operations. The expectation is that the MDPS will devote 50% effort to this role.

Some specific duties include providing oversight of operating room schedules, case prioritization, conflict resolution, coordination with the Patient Logistics Center, and collaborative leadership of patient safety, quality, and operational performance for the operating rooms. Additional details are available for interested candidates. Official start date will be August 1, with expectation to begin orienting to the role in early July.

The qualified candidate should be a physician in good standing with the medical center and School of Medicine with an active clinical practice in the perioperative arena. Candidates should have at least 7+ years of clinical experience, and experience in leading / managing programs and interdisciplinary teams. Excellent communication skills are a must. Additional formal training in leadership, improvement, patient safety, or management is also required.
