Dr. Anthony Charles has been named Chief of the Division of General and Acute Care Surgery effective September 1, 2018. Dr. Charles currently serves as the Director of Adult Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation Program, leads the Malawi Surgical Initiative, and serves as the Medical Student Clerkship Director.

In addition to his appointment as Chief, Charles will also serve as the inaugural Surgical Director of the Institute of Global Health, a role that will allow Dr. Charles to work closely with Dr. Mike Cohen to support and grow the global surgery research initiatives at UNC. Dr. Charles came to UNC in 2006, earning his Master of Public Health degree in 2008 from Gillings School of Global Public Health, and has distinguished himself as an outstanding educator, researcher, and clinician.

His efforts have been recognized with multiple prestigious awards, including the School of Medicine Distinguished Medical Alumni Teaching Award, as well as induction into the Order of the Golden Fleece, UNC’s oldest and highest honorary society which selects members based upon service to the University. Dr. Charles is an internationally known advocate in the field of global surgery and his efforts in Malawi have set the gold standard for how to ethically and sustainably influence both global surgery and global health.
