Attendees Target Audience: Parents of 5th graders with high functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome who will be headed into middle school next year. Interested parents of 4th graders are also invited to attend. PLEASE NOTE, this training is not intended for professionals.

This workshop is intended for parents/caregivers of children with ASD (in primarily inclusion school settings) who will be transitioning into middle school soon. The day will include presentations and group discussions focusing on how parents/caregivers can help their child transition more easily. Content includes general information about middle school, accommodations and modifications, friends, bullying, stress, anxiety, relaxation, puberty, and hygiene. Parents/caregivers in attendance will receive a workbook to use with their child at home.

Objectives:

Participants will:

  • Become informed about the new middle school setting and the differences from elementary school 
  • Learn strategies which are helpful for parents and students in the transition to middle school
  • Review the learning and thinking style of autism and be knowledgeable on how this can affect classroom learning and behaviors
  • Become familiar with different organizational strategies that can be helpful for the student in middle school with regard to homework and class work  
  • Have increased understanding of strategies for the increased social demands and the increased challenges of puberty
