The day includes presentations and large group discussion focused on strategies to build organizational and communication skills in order to prepare children for entry into the kindergarten classroom environment.  The TEACCH approach to understanding the behavior of children with ASD will be used to help problem solve behaviors that might influence learning and plan ways to minimize potential behavioral difficulties. The workshop will conclude with a parent panel. The panel will include parents of children with ASD who recently transitioned to a regular education kindergarten classroom.

Upon completion of this training, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize the characteristics of autism that may affect a parent’s child’s learning in a kindergarten classroom
  • Learn strategies to help promote the development of communication and social skills as related to the classroom environment
  • Identify ways to assist teachers in the interpretation and management of challenging behaviors
