Anthony Charles, MD, MPH, FRCSEd, FACS, is a professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the UNC School of Medicine. He is also an adjunct professor of public health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and the director of Global Surgery for the UNC Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases. Dr. Charles is the director of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) at UNC, and the founder and director of the Malawi Surgical Initiative (MSI). Through his work with MSI and UNC Project-Malawi, Dr. Charles has helped increase the number of surgeons in Malawi who serve the population of 18 million people, and he has given Malawians the training needed to become global surgeons.

Dr. Charles attended medical school at the University of Lagos in Nigeria. He completed his surgical residency in LA. He completed his surgical fellowship in trauma, critical care and ECMO at the University of Michigan. He was also a fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, and a fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. He is board certified in general surgery, surgical critical care and neuro critical care.

His efforts have been recognized with multiple prestigious awards, including the School of Medicine Distinguished Medical Alumni Teaching Award, as well as induction into the Order of the Golden Fleece, UNC’s oldest and highest honorary society, which selects members based upon service to the University. Dr. Charles is an internationally known advocate in the field of global surgery and his efforts in Malawi have set the gold standard for how to ethically and sustainably influence both global surgery and global health.

The Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases, Division of Infectious Diseases, and Center for AIDS Research at UNC co-sponsor a weekly conference series that features distinguished clinicians and scientists from UNC, local universities, and other national and international institutions. The topics are varied and appeal to not only infectious disease specialists, but also professionals in epidemiology, public health, microbiology, biostatistics and other global health-related disciplines.
