UNC Green Labs Seminar

There is no Why in Waste: Transforming Research Labs into Sustainable Spaces

Allison Paradise, CEO of My Green Lab

Wednesday, May 15th
1:30-3:30 PM
1131 Bioinformatics Building

Transforming Research Labs into Sustainable Spaces Research labs are estimated to throw away 12 billion pounds of plastic annually, enough to cover an area 23 times the size of Manhattan ankle-deep. They consume an average of five times more energy than office buildings and they use at least four times as much water. But it doesn’t need to be this way.

Waste – be it energy, water, or other waste – usually only arises when we do not stop to question our behavior. Asking why, such as ‘why is equipment left on overnight?’ leads to insights that reduce waste.

This seminar will explain how to join the growing green labs movement by providing simple, concrete steps that can be taken to reduce the environmental impact of research. The talk will also explore what’s next for the green labs movement, including sustainable procurement and Green Lab Certification.”

UNC Freezer Challenge Winner Announcement

After Allison’s presentation, we will announce which lab has won the UNC Freezer Challenge, a snazzy trophy, and an energy-efficient ultra low freezer, all while enjoying delicious Maple View Ice Cream!
