UNC School of Medicine Celebrates Class of 2019

On Saturday, May 11, the UNC School of Medicine held its annual Hooding Ceremony, celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2019.

Joined by family, friends, and faculty, UNC School of Medicine’s Class of 2019 celebrated graduation on Saturday, May 11 at Memorial Hall.

The annual hooding ceremony marks the formal conclusion of these students' experience at the UNC School of Medicine. On March 15, the students celebrated Match Day, where they learned where they will spend the next several years completing their residency training.

Wesley Burks, MD, Dean of the UNC School of Medicine, and William L. Roper, MD, MPH, Interim President of the UNC System, offered words of welcome, and Edward Kernick, DPM, Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology, delivered the commencement address. Dr. Kernick was selected by members of the class of 2019.

Students then came to the stage one by one to be recognized and honored with their hoods and diplomas. As is tradition, the event closed with a recitation of the Oath of Hippocrates.

A few facts about the Class of 2019:

  • 40 students received dual degrees: 25 MD/MPH, 10 MD/PhD, 4 MD/MBA, 1MD/Master of Education
  • 30 students were recognized as members of the Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society
  • 4 students were commissioned as military officers
