Paul Dayton, PhD, WR Kenan Distinguished Professor, has been part of UNC since 2007 when he was hired as an Associate Professor in the UNC / NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. Throughout his career, Dr. Dayton has demonstrated exceptional scholarship and leadership, and we are excited that he will serve as the Interim Chair of the Department.

Dr. Dayton, who is a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, is an internationally recognized world leader in biomedical ultrasound imaging, ultrasound-targeted therapeutic drug delivery, and using ultrasound imaging to assess tissue perfusion and response to therapy. During his academic career Dr. Dayton has amassed over 175 publications, and is widely regarded as an outstanding scholar who has made exemplary research contributions. Dr. Dayton is also an expert in translational science, as evidenced by his multiple patents, two clinical trials, and his co-founding of three startup companies: SonoVol, Inc , Nanosonic Bioreagents, LLC, and Triangle Biotechnology, Inc. Dr. Dayton was recently named a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biomedical Engineering, received the Pioneer award in Biomedical Wellness, and his publications have been placed in the “Top 8 Highly Cited Articles” and “Top 20 Downloaded Papers” lists to name a few of his accolades.

Dr. Dayton is also known for his leadership capabilities and prior to this new role he was serving as the Associate Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering since 2012. He also currently serves as the Associate Director for Education for the UNC Biomedical Research Imaging Center, is Co-Director for the Certificate Program in Biomedical Imaging Science, and has previously been the Director of the Graduate Program and Chaired Admissions and Recruitment in the Department.

Dr. Dayton is taking over for Dr. Nancy Allbritton, who has been an outstanding Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering since 2009.
