Leaders of the Family Support Initiative interest group, medical students Lou Gaghan and BT Parker, partnered with Student Affairs on a task force to create a New Child Adjustment policy for the School of Medicine. Passed by the Education Committee in June, it expresses the school's commitment to equitably support students when a new child comes into the student's care by outlining available options unique to the TEC curriculum and resources available for guidance. This policy is designed to empower students to make informed choices in family planning, guarantee the students' rights to privacy, and promote career satisfaction by supporting students' personal and professional aspirations. It comes in the wake of several new efforts on the part of UNC School of Medicine to enhance the student experience by promoting an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
