Please read this update on leadership updates happening around the Triangle.

Dear Colleagues,

You likely remember that UNC Health Care announced a new operating model and committee structure last September. That announcement included updated roles for Gary Park, Chris Ellington, Ian Buchanan, Cathy Madigan and myself. Since my transition to President of UNC Hospitals, and in part as a result of changes to leadership throughout the system, we have been working to assemble and reorganize the Triangle West leadership team (for UNC Hospitals, the Hillsborough Campus, Chatham Hospital, and Wakebrook). As part of this effort, I am pleased to share with you an update on our current organizational structure:

  • I have asked Rowell Daniels, System Vice President for Pharmacy, to serve as Interim Chief Operating Officer (COO) while a national search is underway. Rowell will work with UNC Hospitals’ executive leadership team to help coordinate our services while we search for a permanent COO.
  • Matt Smith has served as the Vice President for Finance at UNC Hospitals and will be transitioning his work to support our new System Ambulatory Services Organization. In this new role, Matt will serve as Vice President responsible for UNC Wellness Centers in Chapel Hill and Cary, UNC Urgent Care Centers, and Virtual Care Programs. I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to Matt for his time supporting the Medical Center.
  • With Matt’s transition, and while we search for a permanent Chief Financial Officer (CFO), I have asked Will Bryant, Associate CFO for the UNC Health Care System, to dually serve as interim CFO for UNC Hospitals.
  • Jeff Strickler continues to lead both the UNC Hillsborough and UNC Chatham Hospitals. As such, Jeff is now being recognized as both President of UNC Chatham Hospital and COO of UNC Hillsborough Hospital.
  • Meghan McCann has spent several years working with our ambulatory care services. Recently, she joined the Medical Center executive team as Vice President for Hospital Operations and will continue to be a liaison to hospital-based clinics.
  • After many years as an Associate Vice President, I am very proud to announce the promotion of Dan Lehman to Vice President. This is a well-deserved recognition for Dan’s many years of dedication to our organization, our employees, and the patients we all serve. In his new role, Dan will report directly to the COO.
  • After serving as the Pediatrics Clinical Director for 10 years, Melanie Dawes MBA, MHA, RN has been promoted to Associate Vice President for Children’s Services. In this capacity, Melanie will work collaboratively with Dr. Stephanie Davis, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, to lead Children’s efforts across the Triangle. In her new role she is responsible for establishing direction and strategy to optimally support the strategic priorities and operations across Children’s Services at the Medical Center and affiliated practices and programs. She will report dually to Cathy Madigan, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, for nursing practice, accreditation, and clinical services and Meghan McCann, Vice President of Operations, for strategy, business development, and provider engagement.

A full listing of all UNC Hospitals leaders’ responsibilities can be found at this link. I am very excited to see our executive team form and I look forward to their great success. Please join me in congratulating each of these leaders for their roles.

Most importantly, I again thank each of you for your continued dedication to our patients, our guests and to each other.

– Janet Hadar, President, UNC Hospitals
