The Foundation Phase of the School of Medicine’s curriculum seeks a co-director of the “Principles of Medicine” Block for first-year medical students for fall 2020.

The Foundation Phase of the School of Medicine’s curriculum seeks a co-director of the “Principles of Medicine” Block for first-year medical students for fall 2020. The block runs from August 3 to August 26 and consists of foundational and clinically-oriented content (e.g., introductory cell biology, biochemistry, epidemiology, genetics, histology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology) so that these disciplines can be revisited, augmented, and integrated into organ-system blocks over the first three semesters of the MD curriculum. The new co-director will work with the current co-director and will receive 12% salary support up to the NIH salary cap. Duties will include curriculum design and scheduling, potential content delivery, small-group management, assessment development, and attendance at monthly Foundation Phase meetings. Ideal candidates will be familiar with block content, the learning management system (Sakai), and assessment systems and mechanisms (e.g., ExamSoft and NBME). Co-directors are expected to be in attendance at a majority of the block sessions (Monday through Friday, 8:AM to 12:PM) to monitor instruction, interact with students, and orient them to the School of Medicine. Self-nominations as well as nominations by chairs or colleagues are welcome. Top candidates will be interviewed with a final selection being made by April 13. Nominations and applications will be accepted by Kurt Gilliland (kogillil@med.unc.edu) until March 2.
