Natalie Richmond, a fourth-year medical student at UNC School of Medicine, has been awarded the 2020 American Geriatrics Society Edward Henderson Student Award for her leadership and involvement in advancing geriatric medicine. Timothy Platts-Mills, MD, MSc, Vice Chair of Research, Department of Emergency Medicine, said Richmond’s significant contributions to geriatrics clinical research with his research group have resulted in Richmond co-authoring twelve articles in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at nine medical conferences.
Richmond was a co-leader of the Geriatrics Student Interest Group and is currently a participant in the “Care of the Older Patient” Scholarly Concentration Program. Richmond spent the summer of 2017 as a researcher in the UNC Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) program, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging with a T35 research grant to the Center for Aging and Health.
“This is an incredibly prestigious national award that goes to the best medical student in Geriatrics. It is a great honor for a UNC student to receive it, and Natalie could not be more deserving,” said Lindsay Wilson, MD, MPH, UNC Medical Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor and Assistant Professor, Division of Geriatric Medicine. “She combines her genuine, heartfelt passion for Geriatrics with impressive research and clinical skills that rival those much farther along in their careers. Without a doubt, Natalie will be a leader in Geriatrics.”
Richmond anticipates beginning residency training in internal medicine in the summer of 2020.
