Cell Press, the publisher of the Cell and other affiliated journals, published a list of 100 Inspiring Black Scientists in America, as compiled by Antentor O. Hinton Jr., PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Iowa; Zer Vue, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at UC-San Francisco; and Haysetta Shuler, PhD, at Winston-Salem State University.

Three members of the UNC School of Medicine faculty were included:

Craig E. Cameron, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Jeffrey Houpt Distinguished Investigator.

Folami Ideraabdullah, PhD, assistant professor in the UNC Department of Genetics, who holds a joint appointment in the Department of Nutrition in the Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Genevieve Neal-Perry, MD, PhD, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Her start date is April 15, 2020.
