“Nearly half of the American population over age 20 has hypertension and many do not know it,” said Raven Voora, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension.

“Having high blood pressure can increase the risk of heart attack, kidney disease and stroke. The UNC Hypertension Clinic is thoroughly committed to providing our patients with the highest quality hypertension care centered in current scientific research. This hypertension certification recognizes our practice’s commitment to following proven treatment guidelines to fully address the needs of people with hypertension.”

According to the AHA, certified practices must be primarily devoted to patients with hypertension and related disorders, be recognized as referral and treatment resources for resistant and secondary hypertension and have facilities and personnel capable of assessing and evaluating complicated hypertension problems. Certified Comprehensive Hypertension Centers are recognized as leaders in providing the most up-to-date effective treatment strategies based on current evidence-based research in hypertension.

The UNC Hypertension Clinic underwent several reviews by American Heart Association (AHA) quality improvement specialists, who evaluated the practice’s policies, procedures and operations to ensure appropriate diagnosis, evaluation and treatment protocols were in place and executed for hypertension patients.

“We are proud to see the UNC Hypertension Clinic receive this certification, confirming that our patients can be confident in UNC’s treatment of hypertension and its co-morbidities,” said Alan Lee Hinderliter, MD, the Henry A. Foscue Distinguished Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology.

The goals for the certified Comprehensive Hypertension Center include providing comprehensive and compassionate care of patients with hypertension, participating in hypertension research, and providing training opportunities for students, residents, and fellows.
