Dear Physician-Educator,

I write to you in my role as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education. First, I want to thank you for the very important role you play in the professional development of our medical students. I am sure many of you can recall the impact that an especially effective resident or attending had on you. I greatly appreciate your important work in shaping the career paths of our students.

The UNC School of Medicine has a reaccreditation site visit this coming March 2020. For the past three years, the school has been working to prepare for the visit which affects all levels of the organization, including you, as attendings. I want to make sure we are the best teachers possible (and that we are all well prepared for the site visit). I know your time is precious but please review information that is critical to the delivery of our MD Program. Please visit each of the links below.

THE FULL MD CURRICULUM

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND STUDENT MISTREATMENT
A positive working and learning environment is essential for everyone in the healthcare systems. From the MD Program perspective, we have put the following measures in place.

At the end of each rotation, students rate the learning environment in three domains that you shape:

  • Effectiveness of resident teaching (separate rating for attending teaching)
  • Inclusion in the healthcare team in the care of patients
  • Creation of an environment conducive to learning (separate ratings for attending and other healthcare professionals).

Medical students can report mistreatment in three ways:

  • Rotation evaluation
  • To Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Alice Chuang at alice_chuang@med.unc.edu
  • Online link

CLINICAL SUPERVISION AND DUTY HOURS
As you will recall, there are limits on what a medical student can do and when supervision is required.

Again, thank you for your support of the MD Program at UNC and do not hesitate to contact me.

With gratitude,

Beat Steiner
